Another year has flown by far too quickly and before long we enter the hmmm what are we calling the next decade ? The "tens", the "teens" ?
I started the year with a big decluttering spree but that kind of petered out and I mostly just plodded along aimlessly for the remainder of the year.
The giant garage sale pile of "stuff" is STILL in the middle of the living area but at least it has shrunk slightly. Hopefully I will organise a charity to come and collect the rest before 2009 is finished so I can achieve my previous new year resolutions.
So, its been a travel free year, a theatre free year, a promotion free year, and clearly I have not achieved the "moving to the east coast" goal. So what exactly have I done ?
In March a pal flew in to do some sightseeing and accompany me to a week of 80's flashback gigs when Absolutely 80's came to town. I was able to play tourist in my own city and explore Kings Park, Cottesloe, AQWA and the Zoo. It was a great time to experiment with my photography. Then at night we rocked away to the sounds of the 80s and I practiced my concert photography.
In April, Jools and I enjoyed freebie tickets to The Who. We planned to sit in the park listening to the concert but two ladies left during the 3rd song and handed us their tiks - so we waltzed on in to see some legends for free !! The only casualty was my big toe - crushed by a huge drunk and security. Its STILL healing in December !
In July I had the pleasure of meeting a long tme idol, the still gorgeous Dirk Benedict, star of the 70s series Battlestar Galactica and the 80s series The A Team.
In September it was time for the evergreen charmer Chris Isaak to visit again. Two lovely concerts featuring the great songs from his new album which has become a real favourite of mine.
In October my birthday present to myself was tickets to another evergreen performer - John Farnham. Despite seeing him perform many many times since the mid 80's - he never fails to impress. And the move from big stadium venues to smaller theatre venues was an exciting change. Like Isaak, Farnsey likes to connect with every single member of his audience and in a 2000 seat theatre that is a much easier job. His voice is still unbelievable, his jokes are still bad ! His band still rocks with all their might.
In November I think all I achieved was shopping. I think it was to make up for the lack of holidays to be honest. I bought a new camera (Canon SX20is) - getting a friend in the US to post it to me for a huge saving on Aussie prices. That same friend took a photo this year that really called to me. I have been looking for just the right piece of art to hang in my bedroom. I had been to a view art sales and found nothing that appealed. But my friends photo was just the thing so I sent it off to become a large canvas print. Thats the photo on the right ! And when I get around to building my new bed - it will hang above it.
December - well work has been mental. I somehow got volunteered to be an "expert" in something I dont really consider myself to be very expert in. Namely learning the new $800 mil computer system via thousands of pages of learning packages. The goal being that I will be somehow capable of teaching others in Feb/Mar when we do the massive changeover. So I have been coaching 6 new starters in debt work all day and then staying till 7pm each night trying to absorb all these packages (not entirely successfully to be honest).
In the entertainment industry we were saddened by the expected passing of the legendary Bud Tingwell, the gorgeous Farrah Fawcett, and the truly divine and lovely Patrick Swayze, and we were shocked by the sudden death of Michael Jackson and the bizarre hysteria that followed. The world was introduced to his beautiful children at the saddest moment of their lives.
And other than that - not much !
So I wish you all a very happy new year and a fascinating, luscious 2010.
